Frankfurt used to be the largest preserved medieval city in Europe.
Like many European towns, it was greatly damaged during WWII. Here you can find some pictures of the

When you come to Frankfurt by plane, you might be coming in over
Mainz,
Gutenberg's city, which is dominated by the big, red cathedral.

Mainz is also one of the strongholds of the Rhinish carnival, or, in the words of the people of Mainz, the "Meenzer
Fassenacht."
